Why, hello there!
WHAT IS A TRAVELER’S MIND?
I’m so excited to welcome you to the blog for A Traveler’s Mind and tell you what this project is all about! I’m Joia, and I’m the creator behind this site. (If you’re curious about my story, you can find out more on the About page.)
A Traveler’s Mind is my play on writing and sharing a travel blog. All my life, I’ve been inspired by the lives and work of the world’s great creators and innovators, and the single most important thing I’ve learned about achieving creative success is: it’s important to focus on process and view the work of one’s life as a journey, ideally a journey fueled by curiosity.
Curiosity is at the start of every journey that leads to creative high achievement. Curiosity is also important for sustaining one’s momentum forward in the face of the obstacles and roadblocks on the way to great success. And once one does achieve a significant milestone, curiosity is what propels growth to the next level.
But curiosity doesn’t necessarily come automatically….
In my coaching work (in which I support highly ambitious creators to achieve and sustain high levels of performance in their creative, achievement-driven lives), I encourage the work of cultivating curiosity as the first step toward creative success. How can we become more curious about the universe, about other people, and about our own selves?
Personally, I’ve found inspiration starting with actual travel adventures to places unknown to me. Whether it’s been traveling myself to new places or experiencing the stories other explorers, these travel adventures have helped me to become an overall more exploratory person when facing all the unknowns in my life. And there have been lots of unknowns.
Because, let’s face it, that’s what all truly creative work entails: facing the unknown and being able to move forward and produce values.
I’m starting this blog because I want to be proactive in focusing on curiosity and exploration, and doing so in a way that is fun, playful, and inspiring. I also want to invite kindred high-achieving spirits with ambitious goals of their own along to share the journey with me.

So, please join me on this blog adventure in which we will peruse journeys of creative exploration, wide-ranging historical & global connection, and world discovery!
Travel offers each of us the promise of growth and personal transformation, as we set off to face the unknown from whatever starting point we’ve been given. It challenges us to literally “expand our horizons” and make something worthwhile and better of our lives.
And we don’t have to go it alone – even if our only companions are people we never get to meet in person.
As a long-time fan of the genre of travel writing. I’ve enjoyed peering over the shoulders, as it were, of writers who have been global adventurers. I have grown and become a better version of myself by connecting with their experiences and re-living their journeys through words on a page. As media continues to evolve, I’m excited by the exponentially increasing opportunities to make connections through sharing our stories of curiosity-fueled adventures.
It’s never been easier to see the world and learn from others all around the globe. But how do we make the most of the opportunity, and do so without getting overwhelmed in the process?
I’ve been intrigued by the now-famous opening of Rick Steves’s popular TED Talk, The Value of Travel. He says that, after his 30 years of wide-ranging travel experiences, “it’s really clear that travel, thoughtful travel, is well worth the time and the money.”
But what, exactly, is thoughtful travel?
(Yes, I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about the meaning of the word “thoughtful” as it applies to travel… Note: if you don’t like self-reflection and thinking about thinking, you’re not going to like this blog.)
It’s clear, people do spend lots of time and lots of money on travel. Just try to imagine all the added-up hours that go into dreaming and planning to travel, all the hard work and savings, as people everywhere around the world yearn to see more of it. But what’s the return on that kind of investment? Is it indeed well worth it, as Rick Steves claims, and – can we make it even more so?
That’s what this blog, to put it briefly, will be all about: the work of trying to answer the questions what is thoughtful travel? why is it so valuable, especially to creative success? and how can we get more value from every journey? And as is the case with many questions, I’m a strong believer that the best “answers” just lead us to more and deeper questions…
I’d like to say, I’m also a strong believer that the journey of questioning is part of what makes the overall journey of a human lifetime so interesting, so meaningful, and so exciting!
If you agree, I hope you’ll subscribe to this blog, share your thinking, and participate in a conversation in which we all can try to learn from each other’s experiences. I want to make my life a creative adventure marked by continual growth, and I know that one of the best ways to further that goal is through trading and sharing stories and values with others on their own such quests.
You can expect several postings each month on this blog, and more opportunities for learning and engagement as it grows. So, let’s get going –
Bye, for now!
